Divx is based on the MPEG4 compression standard and is for video what mp3 is for music. The divx codec allows compression of video to such an extend that a full length movie fits on a single CDROM. As a result downloading online movies has become as popular as online music and online games.

The original divx;-) is based on a hack of Microsoft's Media Player, but it's success has lead to two independent groups, Project Mayo and openDivX, producing legal compression and decompression software.
